His illness and the resulting care ate into Treena’s nest egg, and pushed her dream to open a dance studio into the unforeseen future. Big Jim was an older (oy, from what I could glean, easily old enough to be Treena’s father) man who married Treena for her ability to be his arm candy, and promptly had a recurrence of cancer. ![]() She took an 11 month sabbatical from la Stravaganza, the Vegas casino show she’s in, to care for her husband, Big Jim McCall. Treena McCall is a professional Vegas showgirl clearly on the downswing (read: the wrong side of the age spectrum) of her professional career. I had no idea Skintight was a reissue when I picked it up, but I had never read it and the Vegas showgirl coupled with professional poker player hook piqued my interest. 5/9/2023 0 Comments Wayward son novel![]() ![]() In the climax of the novel, Carrie is humiliated at prom, promptly loses her s–t, and tears the town apart. King really gives us a feel for what it’s like to be ostracized by your peers and demonized by your own mother. Most particular is Carrie herself, as we follow her uncertain thought process. These interludes give a linear story the collection teases us with the climax. Unlike Dracula, there are interludes in which we get to really see into the characters’ minds. ![]() The story is told through a collection of articles, interviews, and the like. King writes Carrie in a similar trend as Dracula. Oh, Did I Mention She Has Telekinetic Powers? Carrie struggles to function in the nightmare called high school, tormented and teased at every turn. She lives with her insanely religious mother who shelters her from about almost everything not in the Bible, including that time of the month. ![]() Carrie follows, oddly enough, Carrie White, a high school girl who is wildly unpopular with the other kids. ![]() 5/9/2023 0 Comments Mcraven book make your bed![]() It wasn’t clear whether that was because they hadn’t been required to make their beds at home or because they thought the task wasn’t important enough. However, many of McRaven’s compatriots disagreed. And that’s why it’s vitally important to start your day with simple but necessary tasks like making your bed. It also says a lot about your ability to represent your country and its Navy. But that doesn’t fly in the Navy! As McRaven quickly learned, the ability to obey basic tasks and form good persona hygiene habits says a lot about your character as a person. And because your parents aren’t there to correct you, you can get away with it until you grow up and get some common sense. You can leave your bed unmade for days and leave your dorm littered with potato chip packets and candy wrappers. ![]() However, these environments are separated by a number of key differences, including the fact that at college, you can get away with wearing your underwear inside out instead of washing it. ![]() ![]() It also quickly shows your true colors as people begin to discover who was taught to be responsible and organized and who arrived at college without so much as the basic skill of doing your own laundry. ![]() 5/9/2023 0 Comments Salvaged by Madeleine Roux![]() She was born in Minnesota and now resides in Seattle. Happiness filled him when he discovered the age of the hotel at last worked in his favor, and one side of the window was a slider he could open for some fresh air. He pulled the flimsy white curtains aside and inspected the window. ![]() The knob was turned all the way over to COOL, and Will sighed. Underneath was a small knob with a faded line painted on it. Will approached the unit and discovered a small metal flap on a hinge at one end. A stamp with the brand name Rest Easy was affixed to one corner, and warm air gusting out of the vents blew the sheer curtains away from the windowsill. Will sidestepped to the end of the bed and peered down at the thing. The heating/air conditioning unit under the window-a long metal contraption with a number of vents set at an upward angle-made a thumping noise followed by a quiet hiss. “So I’ve died and gone to Hell, and this is what I have to look forward to for eternity?” Will muttered. ![]() It had to be ninety degrees!
